Research & Development
For many years, we have been conducting practice- and application-oriented research and development. The combination of scientific methodology, modern testing technology, and many years of hands-on testing experience enables us to develop comprehensive and targeted solutions even for challenging tasks.
Our research and development projects range from the development and evaluation of new building materials and construction methods, through the refinement of testing and measurement procedures, to the translation of research findings into practical applications.
Selected Research and Development Topics:
- Stability and deformation behavior of asphalts
- Modification of bitumen, e.g., using polymers, adhesion promoters, and viscosity-modifying or liquefying additives
- Waste incineration ash
- Photometric properties of aggregates and asphalt, e.g., development and optimization of lightened asphalt surface courses and light-colored surface courses without binder
- Recycled construction materials and mineral substitute materials
- Solidification and treatment of contaminated construction materials
- Use of ultra-fine sand from Hamburg harbor dredging
Milled asphalt and asphalt reuse - Use and evaluation of asphalt reinforcements, e.g., glass mesh fabrics
- Development and evaluation of innovative and resource-efficient construction methods
- Evaluation of performance characteristics and durability of asphalt and mineral construction materials
Special Investigations and Specific Test Methods:
We use specialized investigation and testing methods to carry out research and development projects. Depending on the task at hand, we combine standardized test methods with expanded, project-specific investigations.
- Bending Beam Rheometer (BBR)
- Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR)
- Force-ductility (KD)
- Split-tensile, tensile, and fatigue tests
- Rutting tester
- Luminance meter (LMT) for measuring photometric properties
- Determination of modulus of elasticity and elastic properties, including
- ultrasonic methods
- Fatigue behavior of asphalt
- Behavior of asphalt at low temperatures
- Stiffness and deformation behavior—in particular, compression-swelling tests
- Rheological investigations and aging tests on bitumen and bitumen-containing binders
- Investigations into the reuse and quality of reclaimed asphalt
The topics and methods listed represent a selection of our research and development activities. Depending on the specific task, standardized, modified, or custom-developed test methods may be employed.
